Hen & Chickens – A Butter Chicken Paradise in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter
Location: Hen & Chickens, Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham
Visited: July 2025
Avg. Price: ~£16–£20 per person
A Local Legend in the Jewellery Quarter
If you’ve ever walked down Constitution Hill in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, chances are you’ve seen the buzzing crowds outside Hen & Chickens. It’s not fine dining, it’s not polished—but it’s earned a cult reputation for one dish in particular: Butter Chicken.
We visited in July 2025, and here’s why this humble spot continues to win hearts.
First Impressions
Hen & Chickens isn’t trying to be fancy. Step inside and you’re greeted by the aroma of masala, butter, and char-grilled meats. The décor is modest, the vibe is busy, and the clientele is a mix of students, families, and late-night foodies.
And honestly—that’s part of the charm. This place is about flavour first, everything else second.
What We Ordered
- 🥘 Butter Chicken – Their signature masterpiece.
- Cheese Naan – Gooey, indulgent, and made for dipping.
- Chilli Fish – Spicy Indo-Chinese starter.
- Chicken Biryani – Generous portion, aromatic rice.
- Egg Fried Rice – Comfort dish, wok-tossed with flavour.
Dish-by-Dish Review
Butter Chicken – The Star of the Show
This is hands-down one of the best butter chickens in Birmingham. The sauce is rich, smoky, and slightly tangy, with a perfect balance of spice and cream. For extra heat, order it “Desi Hot”—you’ll thank us later.
Cheese Naan – The Perfect Sidekick
Fluffy, slightly crisp at the edges, stuffed with molten cheese. When dipped into the butter chicken sauce, it’s a comfort food experience like no other.
Chilli Fish – Indo-Chinese Kick
Our go-to starter here. Crispy batter, tender fish inside, and a fiery sauce that packs flavour without overwhelming. A must-try if you like bold Indo-Chinese flavours.
Chicken Biryani – Aromatic & Satisfying
Generous portion, well-layered rice, and tender chicken pieces. Comes with cooling raita, which balances the spices beautifully.
Egg Fried Rice – Simple but Effective
Not the star, but reliable. A solid side that pairs nicely with the Chilli Fish.
Ambience & Service
Hen & Chickens isn’t quiet—it’s lively, loud, and full of energy. You’ll find groups sharing platters, couples splitting naans, and plenty of laughter.
Service is quick and straightforward. Staff are friendly and often suggest spice levels or popular dishes if you’re unsure. Even at peak times, our food arrived fast.
Price & Value
Expect to spend around £16–£20 per person, depending on how much you order. Given the portion sizes and flavour, it’s great value for Birmingham city dining.
Final Verdict
Butter Chicken that sets the bar in Birmingham.
Cheese Naan that could win awards for indulgence.
Vibe: Loud, unpretentious, flavour-driven.
Best for: Casual nights, groups of friends, spice lovers, and anyone craving real desi comfort food.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5) – Hen & Chickens is proof that you don’t need chandeliers or fine dining to make a restaurant unforgettable.
Would we go back? Absolutely—we’re already planning our next visit.
